Looking at the best

PETER Bell has been named Fremantle's club champion for 2001.

It was an interesting result.

Bell was an original Docker, the first selected by the new club after an outstanding debut season for South Fremantle in 1994 when he won the WAFL club 's fairest and best award.

Bell was injured in Fremantle's first ever game against Richmond and made just one more appearance for the Dockers in 1995 - also against the Tigers.

At the end of the season he was discarded by Fremantle. He was, it seems, too slow.

Two premierships and a fairest and best award for North Melbourne followed.

Runner up in the Dockers award was Heath Black, who will play for St Kilda next year. Matthew Carr, Matthew Pavlich and Troy Cook were next in the voting.

Other club fairest and best winners: Sydney - Paul Williams; Carlton - Anthony Koutoufides; Brisbane - Simon Black & Michael Voss; West Coast - Ben Cousins; Collingwood - Paul Licuria; Port Adelaide - Warren Tredrea; Adelaide - Andrew McLeod; Hawthorn - Joel Smith; St Kilda - Peter Everitt; Melbourne - Adem Yze; Essendon - Jason Johnson; North Melbourne - Shannon Grant; Geelong - Brenton Sanderson; Richmond - Darren Gaspar; Footscray - Luke Darcy.

It's interesting to note that Bell, Licuria, Grant and Gaspar have played for other clubs.

That Licuria, Grant and Gaspar have played for Sydney.

And that Black and Cousins are from East Fremantle and Bell and Gaspar are from South Fremantle.
