Not all doom & gloom in the West
|
by LES EVERETT
IF you're reading this in one of the eastern
states you may have picked the wrong vibes from over here in the west.
There are two AFL teams based in Western Australia. Currently they are placed
15th and 16th on the ladder.
You've probably heard this means it's all doom and gloom over here. Sorry, but
you have been sadly misinformed.
I follow Fremantle, the team that put up such a spirited showing against and
out-of-form and under-strength Geelong on Sunday and has been similarly spirited
and unsuccessful every week this year. From over in the east you'd probably think
I'd be down in the dumps, gaining no pleasure at all from football.
But you're wrong. Another team is keeping my spirits up - the Eagles.
Fortunately West Coast are at least as useless as Fremantle, in fact in most
losses by the Eagles they don't fire a shot, never look like winning. I love
watching their games.
I don't know how West Coast supporters feel, I've never met one. But please don't
believe the rubbish you hear about people in WA being down because BOTH teams are
hopeless. The current plight of the Dockers would hurt much much more if the
Eagles were in the eight.
In fact, bracketing the two WA teams just highlights what we've given up over
here. Could you imagine Carlton fans expressing concern about Collingwood facing
the wooden spoon - any real Blues supporter would want the Maggies to finish last
every year.
So don't feel sorry for us. There's always next week. Who are the Eagles playing
anyway?
