Boxwood you beauty
|
BEFORE a crowd of just under 2,000 Boxwood Hills and
Jerramungup played what many local football stalwarts have said is the best game
ever played in the Ongerup Football Association to decide the 2002 premiership.
On a brilliant fine day the biggest margin at any stage was 14 points,
Boxwood Hills kicked a goal with 90 seconds remaining to regain the lead and win.
The game started at a hectic pace with Jerramungup on the board early
after a strong mark from full forward Brett Spinks. At quarter time Jerramungup
held a slender lead.
The early part of the second quarter belonged to
Boxwood with full forward Aaron Davis well on top and it was only when Jason
Spinks was forced back to stand aside Davis that Jerramungup fought back to be
just down at half time.
The third quarter saw Jerramungup start to get
on top again with Houston, Baldwin and Bruno Spinks in the fray. Big ruckman Viv
Hall went down from a heavy contest and the game stopped. On the restart Boxwood
got on top and a late goal to Paul Reddington meant it was a five point ball game
at three quarter time.
Boxwood came out blazing with three early goals
in the last quarter and started to look the goods, but the Tigers were not to be
denied, with Jason Spinks going onto the ball and bringing his side back into it.
With six minutes to go and 12 points down Spinks hit the post from 55m, then set
up Bruno Spinks to goal and then kicked a goal to put Jerramungup in front with
less than three minutes to play.
Play from the centre throw up was
frantic, but Boxwood's Trevor Harris managed to get the ball forward for Davis to
mark 30m out. Under immense pressure he slotted his fifth for the day and secured
Boxwood Hills the 2002 premiership.
In all it was fantastic game of
football that was played hard, but very fairly. The OFA should be congratulated
for the excellent facilities at the Nyabing Oval for grand final day.
