Zorak on a Sunday

by LES EVERETT

SOME great names have won the WA Sunday Football League's highest individual award the Bowden Medal.

But the 2003 winner definitely has the greatest name.

Armadale's Zorak Bin Saad was a runaway winner in this year's count and finished well ahead of team mate Steven Mead.

Bin Saad is from Broome and his name comes from the Malaysian heritage of his father.

Meanwhile it's preliminary final day this Sunday and the game will be a meeting of the 2002 grand finalists. A fierce encounter can be expected. Thornlie and Kenwick were fixtured to play in round one but the Lions forfeited the game following an incident which resulted in Royals coach Gavin Hanley and captain Ray Irvine receiving lengthy suspensions.

In round 10 the teams did get to compete and Thornlie won a classic match by three points.

Thornlie won three more games during the qualifying rounds than Kenwick but recent experience will have taught the Lions that history often counts for nothing.

The challenge for Thornlie coach Garry Fuller will be to get his team to focus on the task at hand. It's been a premiership-or-nothing type of a season for the Lions and last week's second semi loss to Maddington has made the the flag look a long way away.

On the other hand Kenwick was hammered by Maddington in the qualifying final and had a scare in the first semi against the charging Tigers.

This will be a mind game.
