Medal to Bootsma

A BARNSTORMING finish took South Fremantle's Brad Bootsma to victory in the 2004 Herald Medal count which was announced at the home of the Bulldogs last week.

Bootsma was in third position behind team mate Joe McLaren and Shark Kingsley Hunter when votes went secret with five games to play. He polled 18 votes in those games. Hunter polled in each of the last five games and finished second in the count.

The medal was presented by 1970 South Fremantle premiership player Franz Tomka.

Paul Hasleby was on hand to receive his second Herald Docker Award while club president Rick Hart accepted a replica of Hasleby's award on behalf of the Fremantle Football Club.

The Dale Kickett Award, as we reported last week, was won by South Fremantle volunteer Marion Reid.

Hunter and McLaren received awards for making up the placings in the medal voting and there was a special presentation to Toby McGrath who has retired from football and enlisted in the army.

The Herald Medal combines the two Fremantle based WAFL teams with votes cast on a 5,4,3,2,1 basis at each East and South Fremantle game during the qualifying rounds.

Bootsma has played 161 games for South Fremantle and also played 23 AFL games for Fremantle.
