by LES EVERETT
THERE were smiling faces at Fremantle this week when young key position players
Luke McPharlin (three years) and Graham Polak (two) signed new contracts.

McPharlin had made it clear his contract negoiations had been on hold simply
because his father was overseas but there had been some speculation about Polak's
future.
"I always wanted to stay," Polak told Thursday's press
conference, "Fremantle is the place I want to be, I'm still learning and Steven
Icke has been a great mentor."
McPharlin said he wanted to be part of a
successful team and was looking forward to making history with his team mates.
"We have a terrific bunch of raw talent and it's important to keep it together,"
he said.
Both players said they would like the opportunity to play in the
forward line in the future but were happy to learn from playing on the great
forwards at present.
Polak also threw a little bit of light on the goal
kicking yips which have seen him notch 3.10 in his 44 AFL games so far. "When I
was at East Fremantle I couldn't miss," he said prompting Chris Connolly to quip:
"And you've gone backwards under my coaching."
McPharlin said he was hopeful
of returning from injury for the round 21 derby.
