Bulldogs tied up
|
by LES EVERETT THE Herald Medal votes for the last five rounds of the WAFL season were revealed
at East Fremantle Football Club last week.
For the second time in the
medal's 13 year history two players couldn't be separated with Bulldogs Daniel
Gilmore and Shane Tipuamantamerri each polling 44 votes.

South Fremantle
players dominated the voting with Clint Jones and Toby McGrath filling the third
and fourth places ahead of the first Shark Kris Miller, the 2003 winner, on
28.
Gilmore and Tipuamantamerri went into the count as joint leaders and
each polled 12 votes in the last five rounds. The big finisher was East
Fremantle's Shaun McManus who picked up 17 votes in the last five game for a
total of 27.
The voting reflected the fact that the Sharks used more
players during the season than the more stable Bulldogs. A total 32 East
Fremantle players polled Herald medal votes compared to 23 from South.
The medal was presented by former Shark and current Fremantle development coach
Steve Malaxos who was the Herald Medal runner up in 1996 to John Porter.
Unfortunately Tipuamantamerri wasn't there to accept his award - he was, we were
told, at training - but the packed social room gave Gilmore a fine reception
despite the fact that he was in enemy territory.
Gilmore now joins Peter
Bell and Paul Hasleby as Herald Medal winners on the Fremantle list.
New
Fremantle assistant coach Mark Harvey was there along with draftees Marcus Drum,
Robert Warnock and Garrick Ibbotson.
The Herald Docker Award won by
Matthew Pavlich was accepted by CEO Cameron Schwab who gave the gathering the
news that the young champion had spent the day in hospital after having a minor
knee operation.
The other award presented on the night went to the
amazing Sharks volunteer Maureen Gathercole who was this year's winner of the
Dale Kickett Award.
While admitting to a being a little embarrassed about
having the award named after him Kickett said he fully supported recognising the
work of volunteers. Kickett said he know had three boys involved in the game and
that had brought home to him once again the vital role played by volunteers at
all levels of the game.
