Under Royal rule
|
by LES EVERETT KENWICK'S dominance of the WA Sunday Football League continues.
Kenwick has won the SFL premiership again.
For the
third time in four years the Royals went into the grand final under coach Gavin
Hanley as the underdog and won the game.
Kenwick grabbed the initiative
early with two goals from Daniel Atkinson and appeared better prepared for the
task than Maddington. The Royals put more pressure on their opponents and used
the ball better in putting on the first five goals of the game. Mark Fitzgerald
kicked the first goal for the Bulls on the quarter time siren and trailed by 23
points at the first break.
Maddington gained a bit more of the ball in
the middle two quarters but Kenwick answered each challenge and took a 32 point
lead to the last change.
Anthony Hynam got plenty of the ball in the
Maddington forward line in the third quarter but found himself out of range while
Lindsay Woods was in dashing form for the Royals. Nik Woods, who was highly
effective in Kenwick's forward line kicking two goals and setting up others, was
sent off during the third quarter giving the Bulls an extra player for 15
minutes.
Maddington kicked three quick goals early in the last quarter
to inject some interest into the game but a brilliant left foot banana kick goal
on the run from the boundary by Lindsay Woods and strong forward play by Tim Hull
put an end to the challenge.
Kenwick won the game by 22 points. Lindsay
Woods was named best player on the ground; Hull had another excellent grand final
and kicked four goals and Atkinson finished with three goals.
Other good
players for the Royals were David McPherson, Dwayne Cook, Josh Osterberg, Les
Sharp and Chris Vellacott in a very even team performance.
Brett Cook,
Eddie Wilkes, Peter Valenti and Adrian Wilkes played well for Maddington.
Maddington won the reserves premiership and Armadale took out the colts.
