THE ARCADE FIRE
Funeral

by LES EVERETT

THIS isn't a new release but it's new to me. Uncut Magazine named this the album of 2005 and I first heard them on the live DVD Coachella with an amazingly shambolic performance of Rebellion (Lies) from Funeral. That song comes at you a bit like London Calling but then takes you to all sorts of places. The Montreal-based seven-piece plays a wide variety of instruments and banging things and their approach is neatly encapsulated in the opening song of the album Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels). If, like me, you've been a little behind the times get with it and buy this.
