Right-o. You listeningby LES EVERETTTAKE time to read the little stories accompanying each painting when you view the works by Jock Mosquito at Japingka Gallery in Fremantle. You'll feel like the artist is standing there with you explaining each of his marvellous works. A couple of the stories even begin with "Right-o" as the artist makes sure he has your attention. On the piece titled Mudoogooloo he writes there's "...not much more I can say about this place." You'll find yourself moving from the world of mustering and fattening up the cattle to the much older world of ceremony, law and dreaming stories from Mosquito's home at Nicholson Station ear the WA/NT border. A relative newcomer to the art world, Mosquito produces work of great consequence with the textured approach he take on the many of the works giving a real feel of the desert. Also on display are colourful works by Evelyn Pultara all titled Bush Yams and some with a textile-like appearance. Another impressive Japingka show. Japingka Gallery is at 47 High Street in Fremantle and is open 10am to 5pm weekdays, Saturdays 10am to 5pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm. From the Fremantle Herald. 5 August 2006 |
