BUFFALO
Volcanic Rock

by LES EVERETT

THERE were a number of reasons I was looking forward to the re-issue of this 1973 album from this great Oz progressive metal band. One was to hear the great line from Sunrise (Come My Way): "The earth was green and verdant like some surrealistic park" that was just so seventies. But something else had stuck with me too. The bass line from Freedom has been tattooed onto my brain to such an extent that I repeat it almost every day of my life - it wasn't until this return to Volcanic Rock that I realised where it came from. There was always a bit of Black Sabbath in Buffalo, their records even came out on Vertigo but they were probably a bit before their time for Australia. Buffalo's debut album Dead forever... carried the instruction 'Play this album loud!' For Volcanic Rock the message was 'Play this album even louder' and that just about says it all.
