DANNY GEORGE WILSON The Famous Mad Mile

by LES EVERETT

THIS is close to the best thing I've heard this year. Wilson grew up in Queensland and now lives in London and was the front man for Grand Drive. He has a wonderful country voice and on a couple of live tracks sounds very much like our own Carus. There's sadness, gentleness and strength in the words and approach and like Springsteen he can make a song about racing cars in the street (the title track) sound almost sweet. Check out the banjo and dobro of Simon Alpin and the Emmylou-style supporting vocals of Jess Klein. Get this and then go looking for Grand Drive - that's what I'm doing.
