What's behind the revivalby LES EVERETTJUST how has Fremantle done it? That's the question on the lips of footy lovers and casual footy acquaintances alike right now. As an insider I feel it's my duty to come clean.
Steven Dodd, spectacular shot maker on the table tennis table. Photos by Les Everett The truth is that many factors are involved. The revival has been a team effort and it has started right from the top. The Governor of Western Australia His Excellency Dr Kenneth Michael knows the secret and he confided in me on Sunday. The Governor has worn his vintage Dockers tartan tie to every home ground since the now distant loss to Geelong. A supporter of my acquaintance has away games under control. If she jumps from her couch and screams in exactly the same way for every goal the game is in the bag. Even I've played a part. Fremantle hasn't lost since I started wearing my Anastazi boots (Midland made, purchased at Bodkins Bootery in Fremantle) to each game I attend. Please let us know if there's something you've been doing for the last eight weeks that has made the difference - but please remember...whatever it is, don't go changin'. Meanwhile a number of Dockers were absolutely thrashed early in derby week. Simon Gerada, arguably the best table tennis player in Australia, and 17-year-old whiz kid Kyle Davis made a lunchtime visit to the club with a challenge for some of the many keen table tennis players among the Dockers. Josh Carr fared best, Paul Hasleby was crushed 11-0 by Gerada but did better in a return match, Steven Dodd showed himself to be a spectacular shot maker, Jarrad Schofield had a bit of trouble outside his off stump, Ryan Crowley's forehand impressed and Byron Schammer booked a practice session immediately after challenging the champs. I trust that's cleared things up. From the Fremantle Herald. 1 September 2006 australianrules.com.au |
