JOLIE HOLLAND Springtime Can Kill You
by LES EVERETT
Holland was the most distinctive voice in the gorgeous Canadian trio Be Good Tanyas. She chews her vowels and caresses her consonants - or maybe it's the other way around - and the result is hypnotic. After my first listen to the song Mexican Blue (dedicated by Holland to her Tanyas team mate Samantha Parton) my reaction was an involuntary "wow!". Surely she's the first to ever fit the words hydrangeas, crystalline and amethyst into the same song (or maybe any song). Holland writes beautifully and while she's musically in touch with her roots her sound is contemporary.
