LAMBCHOP Damaged

by LES EVERETT

THIS is a Nashville band with a difference. But Lambchop isn't just different to other Nashville bands. The sound is dense with strings, horns, electronics, piano and steel guitar among other things but never cluttered. Kurt Wagner's singing is perhaps a bit like Leonard Cohen and his lyrics like nothing you've ever heard. The album opens with Paperback Bible a song inspired by the radio show Swap Shop: "Yeah I'd like to find/ A twenty inch colour TV/ Has to be non working/ An RCA cause I need the parts." Damaged ends, appropriately enough, with an epic. The Decline of Country and Western Civilization written for Candi Staton and presented from a female point of view. Perhaps the most conventional song is Crackers that has a neat bass line you could almost dance to... "Autumn leaves/ But she never said where she was going." Sensational stuff.
