A year of fine viewingby LES EVERETTIT seemed I often walked away from the cinema feeling satisfied in 2006. The year began well with 'Brokeback Mountain' and ended with 'Borat' another film that used male on male bedroom action but to contrasting effect. My top 10 was... 1.'Kenny' - It's very funny and has a great heart. Superb use of the Australian vernacular. 2. '10 Canoes' - Arguably the best film yet by arguably Australia's best filmmaker. An ancient story told in a fresh way and it's funny too. 3. 'Capote' - Great performance by Phillip Seymour Hoffman in this story of the writer and his great work. 4. 'The Burials of Melquiades Estrada' - A gritty western with fine performances and nice non-sex scenes. 5. 'Little Miss Sunshine' - A charming little road movie complete with Kombi and Proust. 6. 'Brokeback Mountain' - It's a well-known fact that if you put two lonesome cowboys in a tent in midwinter there's going to be trouble. 7. '49 Up' - Apted's series remains fascinating. 8. 'Borat' - Squirmingly funny. 9. 'Match Point' - A beautiful and nasty offering from Woody Allen that serves as a reminder that in tennis love doesn't amount to much. 10. 'Hidden' Powerful and the mystery lingers. Honourable mentions: 'Transamerica', 'Solo' and 'Happy Endings'. The worst movie I saw in 2006: 'Basic Instinct 2' Wooden acting, plastic body parts. 27 December 2006 |
