Lions do Denver in VegasTHE United States Australian Football League national championships were played this month in Las Vegas.
Everyone went wild when it was announced Lion cub Jack Cameron was the MVP. In the grand final the San Diego Lions completed an incredible 18-game winning streak when they defeated Denver 4.9 (33) to 2.0 (12). There was a strong Fremantle flavour in the Lions den with 15-year-old Jack Cameron, son of former Dockers marketing man Michael, taking out the most valuable player award in the grand final. Julian Heppekausen, former manager of top Fremantle eateries Left Bank and Bennys, also played for the Lions. A total of 24 teams played in three divisions in the championships and there was also a womens division with four teams. San Diego won the top division making it the best team in America. Former Hawthorn greats Robert DiPierdomenico and Peter Schwabs were guests at the championships and one-time South Fremantle left-footer Rod Grljusich was the guest commentator. 18 October 2006 australianrules.com.au |
