Lions thump Bulldogsby LES EVERETTIT would be fair to say nobody saw the blow-out that occurred in the WAFL grand final coming.
Simpson Medal winner Marc Webb of Subiaco in action during the WAFL grand final. Photo by Les Everett Subiaco had beaten South Fremantle in their three 2006 meetings but the margins of seven, 18 and seven points showed there wasn't much between the WAFL's two best teams. South began well but didn't make the most of early opportunities. Ashley Sampi kicked 2.3 in the first quarter and Clint Jones two behinds. However the truly unforgivable act came from Andrew Siegert who marked in the goal square and gave the ball up after making high contact with his opponent Todd Holmes. The Bulldogs scored 3.6 in the first quarter while the efficient Lions put through five straight goals. After quarter time Subiaco's midfield took control on the back of the dominance of ruckman Luke Newick. The Lions also gained good run from defence and South Fremantle's confidence began to fade. The last quarter turned into a farce as Subi surged forward against listless opposition and kicked 10 goals to two to win by 83 points. Lions captain Marc Webb won the Simpson Medal as the best played on the ground but he was just one of many outstanding Subiaco players. Full forward Sam Larkins kicked seven goals, most from in the goal square, Jarrad Schofield used the ball beautifully as did Allistair Pickett while Chad Cossom, Ben Keevers, David Robbins, Darren Rumble and Sandover Medal winner Matt Priddis all played well. Paul Duffield was clearly South Fremantle's best player while Hayden North and Toby McGrath battled the game out. The win gave Peter German his second premiership as coach of Subiaco. 26 September 2006 australianrules.com.au |
