DVD review: Neko Case live from Austin txby LES EVERETTRECORDED for the Austin City Limits TV show in 2003 and released late last year this is an oddly timed but worthy addition to the Neko casebook. Accompanied by Tom V Ray on stand up bass, Jon Rauhouse on guitars and banjo and Kelly Hogan on vocals, Case presents a passionate and relaxed performance. Actually the relaxed side kicks in during the songs, in the between-song banter she's kind of charmingly overwhelmed and a little shy. When the singing voice comes to the fore we're taken to a whole new level. Case has in some ways an old-fashioned country voice but the overall sound is contemporary. This 14-song presentation features some ripping covers including 'Hex' from Catherine (Freakwater) Irwin's album 'Cut Yourself A Switch', Bob Dylan's 'Buckets of Rain' and Hank's 'Alone And Forsaken'. Also of interest is 'Maybe Sparrow' which was to turn up some three years latter on 'Fox Confessor Brings the Flood'. Neko Case is currently on the road in Australia with shows Thursday 25 January at the Governnor Hindmarsh (Adelaide), Friday 26 January, Fly By Night (Fremantle), Sunday January 28, Troubadour (Brisbane), January 30 and 31, Annandale (Sydney) and Friday February 2 at the Prince of Wales (Melbourne). 23 January 2007 |
