BRETT DENNEN: So Much More

by LES EVERETT

I LIKED this so much that I put it aside hoping return listens would put this debut album into some kind of perspective.

Dennen has a high-pitched, somewhat fragile and highly distinctive voice. His songs tell of despair at some of the big things along with a commitment to live with decency down where we all operate at ground level. Lyrically he's clever, though not showy, while a nod to Bob Dylan is evident. In fact 'She's Mine' is a dead ringer in structure to 'I Want You' and there's a bit of 'Hard Rain' about 'I Asked When' where Dennen asks, "Where is the revolution".

There are no weak songs here but I have two clear favourites. There's a lovely quality to 'The One Who Loves You The Most' - the sentiment is reminiscent of John Martyn's 'May You Never' or even Dylan's 'Forever Young' - and it rock ever so gently.

The first song I found myself singing along to - second listen - was the last track 'Someday' with its well structured chorus: "Some day/ Some day in a cloud of grey/ I will.../ I'll make my great escape."

A classy start - can't wait for what's to come.
