CD review
by LES EVERETTI BOUGHT this in 1973 and remember being impressed by the presentation. The foldout sleeve seemed plush for a local production. I listened to it a lot and liked it way back then. The album has been re-issued in CD form by Aztec Music and the first thing to strike on listening to it again is the richness of the production. Ryan has a bit in common with current roots King John Butler in that he was born in the USA and did a bit of his growing up in the south of Western Australia - Ryan far deeper. (Butler in Pinjarra, Ryan near Albany.) The production still seems pretty rich and the big hit I Am Pegasus still stands up. It's certainly one of the more recognizable Oz songs and once heard is hard to get out of the head. Generally the lyrics are a bit self-absorbed, then again Ryan was a 1970s singer-songwriter, and you have to wonder whether that old girlfriend ever forgave him for some of these ramblings. Despite the rich sound the record shows its age early with the singer inviting the listener (that poor old ex) to "...lift off the needle" in You Put Me On. I bet she did too. And I wonder if LPs made better frisbees than CDs. I never liked the over dramatic Blood on the Microphone and it hasn't improved with age while Sing-Along-Horse-Song, an I Am Pegasus piss take, is a shocker. Generally though it was good to delve into this again and the CD booklet provides great reading about an artist who did it his way and provided an interesting chapter in our musical journey. 12 July 2007 |
