CD review SIMON MOREL Record #2
by LES EVERETT
When you begin a CD with the crackle of a vinyl LP, some Easybeats-style guitar and the words - "Move a little bit closer..." - you're sending out pretty clear signals about where you're coming from.
Morel comes from the mother country and is now based in Sydney so his take on Brit power pop with an Oz twist is well founded.
This is his second album but he has been around in the music business, on both sides of the world, for a long time - about 15 years.
There's a definite sixties feel to this but it doesn't really rock out - due in part, I'm sure, to the fact that Morel's voice lacks a bit of punch. His singing is, however, well suited to the stand out track 'Give Me a Reason' - a power ballad that sounds a bit like The Whitlams.
The opening song 'Tomorrow's Maybe' is another of the highlights.
Michael Carpenter, who also plays a variety of instruments, produced 'Record #2'. The sound is excellent and it's a record that improves with the playing.
Simon Morel plays at the Victoria Park Hotel in Perth on Friday 16 February.
