CD review
by LES EVERETTTHERE's a good chance the name Cindy Walker doesn't mean much to you but one listen to this will show it's not because you haven't heard her songs. A Texan, Walker was born in 1918 and is still writing. She penned hits for Bing Crosby, Bob Wills and Jim Reeves among many other. You do know Willie Nelson - he turns 74 on 30 April - and is as good as he has ever been in this presentation of 13 of Walker's songs recorded old-style. It could be a classic 1957 or 1967 album, instead it's a classic 2006 recording. There's some lovely fun Western Swing - 'Don't be Ashamed of Your Age' contains the line: "Don't mind the grey in your hair/ Just think of all the fun you had putting it there." And there are some beautiful sad country songs, none better than perhaps Walker's most recorded song 'You Don't Know Me' co-written by Eddy Arnold and interpreted over the years by Ray Charles, Charlie Rich, Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, Roy Orbison and at least 20 others. There's a timelessness about this that's somehow life affirming. 'You Don't Know Me: The songs Of Cindy Walker' by Willie Nelson is available from Dirt Cheap CDs, Carillion City, Murray Street, Perth. Call them on 9322 5122. You'll also find Dirt Cheap CDs at Harbour Town (Shop A39) in Wellington Street, West Perth, 9322 7666. 25 April 2007 |
