Royal talls flush Sharks

by LES EVERETT

THE longer the game went at East Fremantle Oval in round six of the WAFL the more the shortage of tall defenders among the Sharks was exposed by East Perth.

The combination of Andrew Merrington, who kicked seven goals, Chris Tarrant (three) and mid-sized Tim Noakes, who also got three, was just too much of a problem for the home team that had Matthew Carr in a key defensive spot in the first half.

Trevor Oliver set the tone early for the Royals with his run from defence and Jeremy Humm, Adam Pickering and Brendan Hancock also played well.

Andrew Foster was impressive and kicked three goals for the Sharks, Jamie McNamara played strongly and Carr was good in the second half.

In the Anzac Day game Swan Districts beat Perth by 33 points in a high scoring match. Ashley Hansen kicked seven goals and Chris Yarran three for the winners. Mark Johnson, who kicked three goals, was the best of the Demons.

Subiaco remains unbeaten after thrashing West Perth by 71 points. Brad Smith scored seven goals for the Lions. The Falcons kicked five goals for the match - all in the third quarter.

At Claremont Oval South Fremantle beat the home team by eight points. Nick Paine continued his good recent form and kicked four goals, Paul Mugambwa got three in another impressive effort and Josh Head had another fine game. David Crawford scored five goals for Claremont and Ian Richardson four.

Next week: East Perth vs Swan Districts, West Perth vs East Fremantle, Perth vs South Fremantle, Subiaco vs Peel.

The ladder: Subiaco 24; South Fremantle 16; Swan Districts 16; Peel 12; Claremont 8; Perth 8; East Perth 8; West Perth 4; East Fremantle 0.
