A Dirt Cheap top 10

WHEN we asked David Mold of Dirt Cheap CDs Perth for his top 10 songs of 2007 he chickened out with this excuse: "I've reached some sort of mid-life tipping point where my 10 favourite purchases for the year contained as many reissues from 1977-79 as new releases from 2007. After you with the Grecian 2000, dude."

David also revealed he'd been frightened off by the whole "lists" thing: "I usually browse such lists but I'm not sure to what practical end, since the only record I ever bought on the strength of its appearance in a year-end number-one position was a live double LP of avant-garde jazz pianist Cecil Taylor performing solo in Bologna. I was just getting into jazz, and was aware of Taylor's venerated status, if not his ultra-challenging style. I'm sure whoever it was at The Wire magazine that rated this album supreme in 1988(?), like me, has barely listened to it since. Every five years I specifically dig it out to see if I'm any closer to being able to play even one side of it. No chance."

So here's a top 10 list with a bit of a difference. It's the best-selling best-value ($12 and under) CDs for 2007 at Dirt Cheap CDs. (As Dirt Cheap sells most Chartbusters for $15, this list excludes any of 2007's new releases).

1. CROWDED HOUSE - Recurring Dream - Best Of

2. PINK FLOYD - Dark Side Of the Moon

3. DIRE STRAITS - Sultans Of Swing - Best Of

4. NIRVANA - Nevermind

5. MUSE - Absolution

6. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL - Chronicle 20 Greatest Hits

7. ELTON JOHN - Greatest Hits - One Night Only

8. RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - Rage Against The Machine

9. EAGLES - Very Best Of The Eagles

10. BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS - Legend - Very Best Of
