Best of 2007: the leftovers

by HOWARD KIMBER

WHILE contemplating my top 10 albums of the year, or more correctly, putting the three albums I bought in 2007 in order of preference, I grabbed a cold sausage from the fridge - leftovers from the first BBQ of the season. This led to ranking something more important than contemporary music or cinema.

What is the best food served cold as leftovers? I think I'd put the humble snag, with or without tomato sauce, in front of capricciosa pizza (pizzas are not all the same - you should never have cold margherita, nor reheat marinara). The roast beef in a roll, excellent. Roast chicken, with a lot of salt, very nice. Roast pork, no point. Chops turn the tables on steak when cooled. Fried rice - not bad. Beef and black bean - not good.

Coffee is good. Iced coffee I just don't get, though that brown stuff on top of a coffee scroll is very nice. While on desserts, apple pie loses none of its positives by spending the night in the fridge, but most other fruit pastries definitely benefit from heat.

Top songs - not that thing by Silverchair, it's "hits for kids by numbers" - a poor man's Coldplay then dumbed down for the ringtone set. And not that "I'm so cool I'm killing myself" drivel from Amy Whinehouse either.

Movies? Did Breathless come out this year? Not the overly "European" A Bout de Souffle (jump cuts my aaaarse, that's just pisspoor editing). Whatever Mickey Rourke did this year, and he probably made 10 movies in 07.

Editor's note:
1. (Mickey Rourke) As far as we can tell Mickey's main effort in 2007 was being picked up for DUI on a scooter in Miami. He was also a no-show for Tarantino's Death Proof. He's got some good stuff coming up in 2008 including one that's already being called totally forgettable.

2. (cold leftovers) Roast chicken.

3. (movies?) A Bout de Souffle was 1959. The Richard Gere Breathless was 1983.
