At play in the Shallows

by JEFF ATKINSON

AFTER buying a waterproof housing for my camera in the late 90's (a very weird looking hi-tech, German made plastic bag) I began to explore the Shallows with the Nippers at North Cottesloe, swimmers at the Somerset Pool in East Victoria Park and then during my son's swimming lessons at Meelup Bay. I was particularly drawn to the above/below water split image and the interesting distortions that the water gave the photographs.

Meelup Swim by Jeff Atkinson.

I have enjoyed wading in the water with so many Australians that cling to the cool edges of our dry island continent to escape the heat of summer.

This show has been shot over eight years of summer holidays and I would like to thank all those people who have allowed me to take their photographs at play in the Shallows.

Jeff Atkinson's exhibition Shallows will run until 4 May at Earlywork Gallery, Shop 9, 330 South Tce, South Fremantle.
