New captain for Melbourne

January 15, 2009
By australianrules.com.au

It's been nine seasons since the Dees named a new captain. It happened today...

JAMES McDONALD has been named captain of Melbourne, replacing the retired David Neitz.
While not a high-profile player McDonald has built up an impressive CV since entering the system via the rookie list in 1997. He has played 217 games, won the club best and fairest award twice and was named in the All-Australian team in 2006.
At a press conference today McDonald said: “To be named captain of the oldest club in the land is a prestigious honour. To be able to follow on from names such as Smith, Barassi, Flower, Lyon and more recently Neitz will be a great challenge, which I am really looking forward to.”
Coach Dean Bailey said McDonald was the type who would lead by example:  “James is a very thorough and intelligent person, and when he speaks, the players and the coaches stop to listen.”
McDonald becomes the 40th player to captain the 150-year-old club.
Cameron Bruce was named vice-captain.
