Whispers from the Port
Warren Tredrea is no longer wearing number one for Port Adelaide...
Things have been a little quiet at Port Adelaide for a while now – probably since about midway through the second quarter of the 2007 grand final.
Quiet really is the right word. I remember sitting near a pack of Power fans at the MCG that day and being amazed at how much noise they made...before the game and when Brett Ebert had a couple of chances early...but it turned out to be quite a peaceful day.
Late last year Warren Tredrea stepped down as captain and recently we heard he'd been allocated number 16. Port Adelaide is big on tradition and the captain gets the number one guernsey.
So who is going to wear one for the Power this year? Some suggest it should be Shaun Burgoyne, the team's most dynamic player. However there has been a push for former East Fremantle player Dom Cassisi while Kane Cornes, the winner of the past two Port Adelaide best and fairest awards, must also be a contender. Cassisi was runner up to Kane Cornes last year and Shaun Burgoyne ran third. All three were premiership players in 2004.
Port play their first NAB Cup game on Sunday 22 February against Sydney at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The new captain will be announced tomorrow Monday 9 February at Alberton Oval.
