Cyprus Avenue scoreboard...
THE Winchelsea scoreboard is part of the cyprus-fringed Eastern Reserve, just off the Colac highway. (The town of 1150 does not appear to have a southern, northern or western reserve.) Painted in the club colours of navy blue, the Harry Budge Memorial Scoreboard keeps things simple: a 'W' for the home team and 'VIS' for opposition clubs such as Inverleigh, Bannockburn, East Geelong and Werribee Centrals.
The Blues play in the Geelong & District Football League and after a winless 2008 season did very well to win five games in 2009, finishing 10th in the 12 team competition.
The club is gaining strength in numbers, now fielding an under-18 team and an under-14 team, which won the flag in 2009.
On my first visit to the scoreboard 12 months ago I found that the metal numbers had the impression of the Shell logo on the back, making me wonder if the scoreboard attendant (Harry Budge?) had fashioned the numbers at a mechanic's workshop. Alas, I didn't have my camera back then and when I returned recently the numbers were not in the scoreboard.
