Cats turn it on

Fremantle vs Geelong at Fremantle Oval...

FREMANTLE didn’t need to be told they’re a long way short of Geelong but the Cats made the point anyway at Fremantle Oval on a muggy Saturday afternoon.
The oval looked great and the Dockers were in control until late in the second quarter kicking six of the first seven goals.
The defence was in control, with Luke McPharlin particularly impressive against Tom Hawkins and Roger Hayden in dashing form, Aaron Sandilands was too good in the ruck and midfielders Paul Hasleby, Paul Duffield, David Mundy and Michael Barlow were constructive. Youngster Justin Bollenhagen kicked two goals and showed pace, confidence and great kicking skill to excite the home crowd.
Geelong, led by Paul Chapman, got back in to the game in the lead up to half time and cut Fremantle’s lead to 16 points.
Five minutes into the third quarter the Cats were in front and going away. A terrible ruck knock at the first bounce of the half by Sandlilands and a shocking kick-in by Adam McPhee helped the Cats get rolling and that was that.
Chapman, James Bartel, Gary Ablett, Joel Selwood, James Kelly, Cameron Mooney, Andrew Mackie and Cameron Ling were all in it but really it was such a devastating team performance in makes no sense to single anyone out.
It’s not unusual for teams to become disorganised in scratch matches but Fremantle’s helplessness for almost the entire third quarter was reminiscent of many games in 2009.
Fremantle 10.5 (65) Geelong 14.12 (96).
