A look at My Week With Marilyn (M)…
MARILYN Monroe was the most famous woman on the planet during her sad, short life span.
And amazingly enough her legacy lives on today.
Many others, including Madonna and Lady Gaga, have followed in her wake but really there's only one Marilyn.
The creation of Norma Jean, her actual birth names, Marilyn became an instantly recognisable figure.
She was the voluptuous, beguiling blonde with a breathy, little girl voice – so vulnerable everyone, especially men, wanted to protect and shield her.
In 1956 in England, Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) heads off to London to become part of the movie industry.
He wangles his way onto the set of The Prince And The Showgirl and somehow ends up as the third assistant director: part of the "shoosh" patrol keeping everyone silent during shooting.
Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) had summoned Marilyn (Michelle Williams) to Pinewood Studios to play opposite him.
Insecure and nervous as she was, Marilyn befriends Colin as a sort of knight-in-arms. He becomes her friend, protector and, maybe, lover.
She uses him up. All this, mind you, after new husband and playwright Arthur Miller has returned to New York.
Colin does stumble upon Marilyn on one occasion when she's deep in a medicated haze. He's aware that she is driving Olivier nuts with her nervousness and undisciplined ways, sending the company crazy too, even
though they are bewitched by her.
Colin plays his boys-own mission well, rescuing Marilyn from the curmudgeonly Olivier as best he can.
There's a couple of great cameos in the film, too. Dame Judi Dench is Dame Sybil Thorndike, smart enough to see through the antics going on around her.
And Julia Ormond as Vivien Leigh confides to Colin that age is creeping up on her, and she knows she will soon fade forever from the view of movie audiences.
